Cleopower! "We’re Rough&Girlie"
Camilla, Alice, Marla’O and Phoenix have been riding the wave of rock’n’roll since 1998, and people often refer to them as “the queens of Italian female garage-punk”.
Over the last two decades they have toured extensively throught Italy and Europe, and have also landed in Japan. Along the way they have rocked many festivals like Festival Beat, Rebellion (UK), Fuzzville (Spain), This is Ska! (Germany), and opened for bands like Morlocks, Pretty Things, The Pandoras, Lords of Altamont, Fuzztones, and Real McKenzies, etc..
The sound of The Cleopatras is mostly influenced by garage, surf, power-pop and ‘77 punk (Ramones, The Cramps, Blondie, New York Dolls, Link Wray ecc..), and inspired by different female bands and artists (Joan Jett, Bikini Kill, The Bangles, The Trashwomen, 60s girls groups etc..)
A fresh, cheeky and ironic mixture of 60s garage, punk rock and rock’n’roll, Rough&Girlie style.
Their newest album “CleoPower!” was released in April 2017 for Ammonia Records. More mature than their previous works in terms of sound and contents, this album ranges from classic garage punk to surf, with a hint of 90s alternative rock. The ironic and light-hearted spirit of the previous records make now way to provocative lyrics that focus on situations where women are victims of stereotypes and cliché.
The video of “Forty” was released on November 25th 2017, and was realized with the contribution of female fans and friends. It invites women to subvert gender stereotypes and take back control of their own lives.
For Italy’s political elections in 2018 the Cleopatras made the video of the track “Vote for me”.
In 2014 their second full-length work “La maledizione del Faraone” was released on CD for the Italian Ammonia Records and on cassette for the californian label Wiener Records, with the singles “Apple Pie” and “Pazzo” as the band’s official videos.
Taking a step back in time, to the Cleopatras early recordings, we find two 7”: “The Cleopatras” (2000) and “Let’s run with…” (2001), after which they went on a hiatus to return in 2008 with a new line-up.
The EP “Dame tu amor” and the album “Things get better” (Area Pirata Records, 2010) date back to that time.
Other fun facts: in 2015 they performed live for the fashion show of the stylist Antonio Marras, during the Milan Fashion Week. They appear in “Le ragazze del rock”, a book by Jessica Dainese dedicated to the female rock scene in Italy.
