Wipers was a recording project formed in 1977 by Greg Sage in Portland, OR. Originally conceived as a studio band, they rarely played live and maintained a DIY ethos that kept them relatively unknown outside their hometown apart from appearances on underground cassette compilations in Europe. It wasn't until a relatively well known band called Nirvana paid tribute to the band by performing cover versions of their songs that Wipers gained a worldwide audience.
The group's tight song structure and use of heavy distortion were hailed as extremely influential by numerous critics and musicians. The band is considered the first Pacific Northwest punk band.
