From OP: One of a group of truly great songs produced by Eric Burdon after forming his New Animals in the autumn of 1966, then to be known from then on as Eric Burdon & The Animals (rather than simply The Animals). "Help Me Girl" (my first music video of an Eric Burdon song) was one of the first to chart. It would be followed by this partly autobiographical ballad, "When I Was Young," with "A Girl Named Sandoz" on the flip side. As the lyrics say, Burdon's father was indeed a soldier, and he certainly did begin smoking cigarettes at age 10, and he was quite 13 when he began dating his first girlfriend. Five members of the band, Eric Burdon being one of them obviously, composed the music and lyrics. Some consider this song to be an early form of grunge rock.
The single was released on April 8, 1967 and peaked at #15 on Billboard and #19 on Cash Box on May 20, 1967, faring even better in Canada at #10 and Australia at #2. It is possible I have taken my interpretation of the lyrics in this music video too far ... then again, perhaps not far enough, LOL. It's a gritty little number in places, hope you enjoy it.
